Why is travel good for teenagers?

2 December 2021

Our teen travel expert, Julie explains 5 different factors why travel is so good for teens and how L&E Teen Travel trips give young people the life skills for future journeys…

Experiencing other cultures

In this day in age it is vastly important for young adults to be in touch with a global world and they can do this by discovering other cultures and customs.  Learning about other cultures helps foster understanding and helps us recognise and respect that there is more than one way of ‘being’.  Travel is the best way to experience a different perspective and to also recognise how much we all have in common.

Understanding how to budget money…

By giving teenagers financial responsibility they will learn the true cost of things and not be so frivolous with their spending.  They may make some mistakes, but it is better to learn the hard way when the amounts are small and the repercussions are light.  By creating things like spreadsheets the teens will be able to track incomings and outgoings which will help them manage their spending to make sure they have enough money for the whole trip!

Teen Travellers

The ability to communicate effectively in a group…

The art of verbal communication is such a vital skill, from asking for directions to job interviews. Teenagers will need to learn to speak for themselves and have the confidence to do so.  When thrust into a group of strangers it is sometimes difficult to get your point across, but when there is a common goal that is fun, teenagers are more inclined to try and exercise their creative muscles.

The importance of good time management…

Learning how to manage your time effectively whilst still being a teenager will set you up for adult life where being late or delaying deadlines are not acceptable. Whilst travelling, time management is key as turning up to a large train station with 5 minutes to spare will not give you enough time to find your platform, go to the toilet and get much needed snacks for the journey!  This skill is also a sure way to keep stress levels down.

Understand the process of building an itinerary…

This is one of the most difficult tasks as it will require all the other skills we have mentioned.  Not only will the teenager have to communicate effectively they will also have to have a good grasp of the financial aspects of the trip and most importantly how to best schedule everything.  This is no easy task!  Even in small groups there will be differences in opinion about where to go, how to get there and how much it should cost.  The teens who are able to learn how to compromise, problem solve and manage conflict will have more success in planning a trip.

Covid-19 Update

23 March 2021

World Camps & Teen Travel programs postponed until 2022

It is with disappointment that I have to announce the postponement of our World Camps and Teen Travel programs for the remainder of 2021.

We have been monitoring the situation very closely to give ourselves every opportunity to reopen for 2021.  However, it has become apparent that this will not be possible.  We have taken into consideration considerable relevant advice and have made this decision based on the health and safety of all children and staff and also the global effort to combat Covid-19.

With international travel still very difficult we have decided not to compromise our ethos and values in the short term and therefore, are focussed on coming back stronger in 2022.

We are very excited about the future and are so grateful for the continued support of all our loyal friends and families. It has meant so much to us that we have had so much communication and love hearing everyone’s news. It has been a difficult time for everyone but please be assured that we are planning on offering more programs than ever in 2022 and look forward to sharing these opportunities for your children.

For all those families who have a credit with us this will carried over to our 2022 programs and any discrepancy in price will be discounted. Programs can be switched between World Camps and Teen Travel Tours.

As you will be aware we have been offering lots of different online experiences and events over the past year and will continue to do so.  This service is for no financial gain but we wanted to offer our families something meaningful during this difficult time.

I wish you all my warmest wishes and hope that you are safe and healthy.

With my Best Wishes,

Sam Ridgway & The L&E Team

Message from Sam Ridgway, Director…

I am delighted to announce the 2020 L&E Programme…

2019 has been an amazing year with so much happening.  We have been incredibly proud of all programmes and are so heartened to hear the wonderful feedback we’ve had.

As our long term aim is to have L&E World Camps in multiple countries around the world we have decided to keep to one venue in the UK for 2020.  It will mean we will be able keep the quality of provision very high with all our experienced staff in one place.  We are delighted to announce our long term partnership with Aysgarth School will continue and look forward to releasing more details about our new camp in British Columbia, Canada for 2021.

It ‘s been a busy couple of months with the L&E Office a hive of activity.  Here are a few of the highlights…

Visit to Amsterdam

In April we were invited by a lovely parent to give a presentation at her children’s school De School van HIP in Laren near Amsterdam.  We had an absolute ball and also took the opportunity to make some plans for our Teen Travel Euro Tour in the summer which will be stopping off in Amsterdam.  Thank you, Yvonne for hosting us and to all those who took the time to hear us speak.

Julie and Hayley are very special members of the L&E team and have been involved with us since 2014. They got married on 20th April in an incredibly emotional ceremony with many members of the L&E staff in attendance. It was a magical day and we are all so delighted for them both. Wishing them many years of happiness together.

L&E Newsletter – Dec ’18

5 December 2018

November was a busy month that brought, amongst other things the introduction of our new booking system which will hopefully allow L&E to move (belatedly) into the 21st century.  Families will have their own accounts where they can see their payment plans, make personal requests and update data to allow for an easy progression to camp.  Please be in touch with the L&E Office if you have any queries about the new system.

The L&E Roadshow got going with Julie visiting Copenhagen (see below for full story). I will be visiting New York in December and will look forward to tell you all about it in the January Newsletter. I wish you all a great festive season and really hope to see many of you in the New Year! SR

L&E Review

We are a small company that don’t have a massive marketing budget to spread the word of L&E. Therefore, we really rely on our loyal families to help us get the message out to other families.  Word of mouth has always been our main source of new families and we truly appreciate all your testimonials and recommendations.  It would be wonderful to have a permanent record on an independent forum where you can leave your honest and open reviews.  We have review pages on Google and Facebook so would be absolutely delighted if you could spare a few moments.  Many thanks in advance.

L&E in Copenhagen

Our first road trip of the season took us to the beautiful Danish capital, Copenhagen.  It was their first cold snap of the year but clear skies made it a thoroughly enjoyable trip.

We were delighted to host 2 L&E information evenings at schools in Rungsted which is just north of Copenhagen.  The first school we visited was Rungsted Skole which is the school L&E camper Freja attends.  Along with Freja and her mother we met some new families and spent an evening telling them all about the 2019 L&E programmes.  The next evening we visited was Rungsted Private Realskole where we again met some lovely new families.  There were lots of great questions from the parents and children from ‘what is the food like’ to ‘how do we pick our activities’.  The families said how great it was to have someone explain how all L&E programmes work in person and how this really put their minds at ease about sending their children to a camp in another country.

We have found these information evenings to be very helpful for families trying to decide upon summer programmes for their children.  They give parents and children the opportunity to hear a presentation from a L&E representative and ask any questions they might have, that includes the children asking questions!  If you would like L&E to come and visit your school, town or city then please get in touch with Julie.

Little/Cool Sam’s L&E Working Journey

I have to tell you a quick story…Sam B has worked with us for the last 9 years and has been a key component of why our camps are so successful.  He is loved by everyone – staff/parents and most importantly, the kids.  He has always been known as “Little Sam” to differentiate from myself (who is ever so slightly taller!!)  However, in my eyes he will always be “Cool Sam”.  The main being reason back in 2012 we had a magical theme night where, inevitably I found myself hidden under a sheet in the front hall while the children searched high and low for me.  A few children rushed up near me (not knowing I was under the sheet) declaring that they’d received a clue from Sam.  One child exclaimed “Do you mean Boss Sam or Cool Sam!!??”……  My ego was crushed for a few moments but, to be fair I definitely can’t compete on the coolness factor with our beloved Little Sam.  Here’s his story in his own words….

I was very happy to have the chance to write about my experiences working with L&E over the years. I’ve been working with L&E since it began almost 10 years ago now! So I’ve had many great summers at camp and seen the impact the camp has on kids as they return year after year. I came to my first camp when I was only 19 years old and at that stage the camp was still working out what it would become in the years to come. We had some really great kids that first year, although we almost had as many staff as kids that year, which did make the staff vs camp dodgeball quite easy! As has always been the case year on year, the kids that are attracted to this camp are always great fun. An amazing aspect of camp is that each week is a completely new experience. While you may have the same size camp, in the same place, with the same staff, the camp will still feel unique, as what makes a camp is the kids and each week is made up of a new, totally unique set of characters, whose mix of personalities make the camp what it is.

I came to work at  L&E   through my family, both my two sisters and my father worked that first year and many of our friends have worked at the camp over those 10 years. The camp has always had a very intimate, family feel to it and that is something that I think was fostered in those early camps. At that stage there was roughly a 2:1 child to staff ratio and it really did feel like one big family. That ideal has largely remained at  L&E through the years and is what makes this camp so special. Despite that,  L&E  has grown every year I have been there and has added new locations and experiences to the original North Camp, such as the new South Camp and teen travel.  It would be so difficult to pick a favorite memory from my years at  L&E, however I think perhaps the most rewarding part of my time at  L&E has been to see so many children grow up over the years. I’ve seen many kids come for their first camp as little 8 year olds, very shy and unsure of how their week is going to work out, and then return for the next 6 years, making life long friends and growing up into really great people. There would be too many kids to name, but a particular highlight has been to see the likes of Tom and Baptiste, who were once kids on the camp, return as staff and be such great tutors. Apart from making me feel old ? that just highlights that the camp has an impact for kids beyond the week they spend with us over the summer. It has been an eventful first 10 years for  L&E  and I hope that the next 10 years will be the same ?

L&E FEATURE – Tennis Academy

Adventure, Sport and Creative activities are always offered at our Camps but there are few L&E Extra courses that are a little more specialised.  Here we look in detail at our Tennis Academy…

South Camp only (1 Week max)

Just as Wimbledon, the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world ends for the year in nearby London, boys and girls will have the opportunity to improve their tennis skills at L&E Tennis Academy at South Camp.

Along with expert tuition from our tennis coaches and first rate facilities at Forres Sandle Manor School the players have the perfect setting to improve their racquet skills.  As well as perfecting court skills the players will receive seminars on fitness training, nutrition, respect and patience.

To ensure this is a week the players will never forget we will take them to visit the famous All England Club, Wimbledon for a tour.  They will get up close and personal with the Championship trophies and clothing & equipment donated by many of the top players.  Of course they will get to see Centre Court and the player’s entrance and even get a tase of what it is like behind the scenes in the BBC Studio.

“Expert tennis coaching with a trip to see Centre court at the world famous Wimbledon”

  • 5 day Coaching programme delivered by qualified coaches
  • Tennis seminars on fitness training, nutrition & respect.
  • Elite Tennis facilities at private school with all equipment provided for the week
  • Tour of the All England Club, Wimbledon including Centre Court visit
  • Exclusive L&E Tennis training kit

Meet the Teen Traveller: Silvia from Italy

25 April 2018

Not only was Silvia part a participant on one of our Teen Travel (TT) programmes she has also attended many of our L&E World Camps.  Let’s meet her…

What is your name, how old are you and where do you live?

I’m Silvia, I’m sixteen years old and I’m from Milan in Italy.

Whist on the TT tour what was your favourite moment?

My favourite moments during TT was when we set up the plan for the following day and when we randomly walked around with no destination feeling carefree.

What is the best way to travel i.e plane, train, car, bike??

For me the best way to travel is by train because is it the easiest and most independent way to travel – and you get a good view!

Out of all the places you visited on TT where would you like to visit again and why?

I would like to visit again Edinburgh because I can’t forget the vivacity of that city. There are a lot of things to visit and to do, and camping at the festival was an unforgettable experience!

Did TT teach you anything?

Teen travel taught me how to plan a trip alone and how important is live on a budget. During TT I met new people and I learned how to get on well with them despite us having different opinions.

Many thanks to Silvia for her insight into the amazing Teen Travel experience.  Want to experience something different this summer???  Call or email us to find out more: +44 (0)1756 521000 / teentravel@learnandexperience.com – we’d love to hear from you.  You can also Schedule a Call for a time when is convenient for you

L&E Road Trip

21 March 2018

Here at L&E we love meeting new people and spreading the word about our amazing summer camps, and that is exactly what the L&E Road Trips are all about!  This year, the L&E Road Trip saw us visit Milan, Paris and Munich where we met up with some old friends and made many new ones.

Our meet-ups went very well and we were so happy to see so many of you and talk to you about our 2018 programmes.  Our luck was in as we had some L&E Alumni to meet us in each destination who acted as L&E Ambassadors while we were in their city.  Their help was invaluable!!!!  Not only did they assist with the occasional language barrier, we got some personalised tours taking in the sights of their home town.

There seemed to be some abnormal weather to greet us in both Paris & Munich.  After weeks of rainfall before our arrival in Paris, the river Seine was swollen to four meters above its normal level for that time of year.  Then when we arrived in Munich the temperature dropped to -10 degrees, which even for a Brit is pretty cold!  The cold weather did make for some amazing sights around Munich, the most amazing of which were the VERY brave surfers who took to the Eisbach which is a small channel of the Isar River.  You really have to see it to believe it!!!

We understand how tricky it can be choosing the right summer camp for your child, this is why we think the L&E Road Trips are so valuable to parents.  They offer the opportunity to meet an L&E representative and really get a feel for how our camps operate, and if they’re lucky, they’ll get to meet an ex-camper or a Teen Traveller, there is no greater insight than hearing it straight from the horses mouth!!!  Our 2018/19 L&E Road Trip will be bigger and better than ever so keep your eyes peeled as we hope to come to a city near you.

Hope and Homes for Children

15 March 2018

We are very proud to support Hope and Homes for Children and their amazing event “A Night of Adventure”.  This year we donated a place on one of our Teen Travel UK Tours.

So far the evening has raised an incredible £22,000!

Orphanages do not protect children, which is why we are working towards a day where every child can grow up within the love and protection of a family. Family-based care has been proven to provide far better outcomes for children, and with your support we are making an impact on the lives of children, families and communities right across the world.

Night of Adventure

Sarah, our North Camp Director, attended the evening:

The motto of the night was ‘just do it’.

It is always an amazing evening listening to these great modern day adventures. There were base jumpers, naked cyclists, mountain men, walkers and complete lunatics. But all in the name of one thing…adventure!

One of the stand out highlights has always got to be ‘McNuff’, the adventure Queen herself. Anna told her tail of cycling 5,500 miles through the Southern Andes with her best mate, Faye Shepherd, and how amazing it was to share the ‘ups and downs’ (pardon the pun) with her.

Next on my list would be the ‘Mountain Man’ himself, Charlie Walker who travelled across Mongolia with the plan of using a semi-wild pony as his mode of transport. The pony had other plans and so the tale goes that Charlie walked the pony across the majestic plains, with a wild dog in toe for company.

The list would not be complete without Ben Saunders, a polar explorer who has travelled in Robert Falcon Scott’s footsteps and completed the longest human powered polar journey in history!

I came away feeling completely inspired and excited for our summer adventure to begin at L&E, wondering what your teen travellers would plan this year! SC

Staff Catch-up

21 February 2018

At this time of year it’s always nice to catch up with friends and find out what everyone is up to.  It seems like everyone is off adventuring far and wide!

Vicky

Vikky who worked this year at our Madrid Camp and North Camp is currently wandering the forests of New Zealand looking for the biggest fern tree she can find!

Julie-Ann

Another staff member off adventuring is Julie-Anne who is teaching in Thailand.  Fortunately she still manages to get some time off to explore the jungle or the islands!

Julie-Ann Coppinger

Harriet

Harriet who has worked for us for a few years now is off in S.E Asia doing some travelling.

Hayley

Another one of our new recruits at camp this year has also been very busy since camp!  A massive congrats to Hayley who is now a fully qualified Pilates teacher and is currently working towards her Yoga teaching training qualification too.  She is still saving the world one dance party at a time!

Hayley MacDonald

Ollie & Tom

Our boys seem to have been in the wars….  Ollie had nose surgery after camp and Tom had to get foot surgery.  They are both all healed up and fighting fit you’ll be glad to know.

Matt, Ollie & Will

Now look who our Kenyan boys Matt and Ollie ran into in Zanzibar…..only Will Smith!!!   Such a small world!!!

Matt, Ollie & Will

Paul

Paul, one of our English teachers at camp is enjoying his first year at Lancaster University studying Economics.

Jade & Sammey

Another girl who is off adventuring is Jade who worked with us at the South Camp.  She is the deputy head of boarding at a school in sunny southern Spain!  Lucky for some!!  A bit closer to home Ashleigh is working hard in her first year of teaching…..head in the books it seems!   Sammey who was also a new recruit is back from travelling in New Zealand and is enjoying teaching Yoga in the West of Wales.

Jade Vidler

Wilson

Another new recruit this year was the lovely Wilson.  After some cancelled flights and a last minute change of airport he is now happily in Courchevel (French Alps ski resort) where he is working for Esprit as a snow ranger (child care) for the next 5 months.  Not a bad place to spend Christmas and New Year!

Sam Clarke-Knowles

Sarah

Our very own Sarah is working hard in her day job and making sure her pupils know all about L&E – good work Sarah!

Sarah Carniel

Here at L&E we are so lucky to have such amazing staff who come back each summer to work at camp.  We have such an amazing mix of individuals who bring a vast amount of experience and creatively to our camps.  A lot of our staff come back to camp year after year and some describe it as their happy place.
